Caramel Apples

My fingers fumbled to get those plastic wrappers off the caramel block. I searched for the folded end to strip that cellophane from that nugget of sweetness. Clunk! Another one drops into the saucepan. Soon they are all unwrapped and I am left with a pile of wrappers which I stuff into their original bag as they flip and float around me. I proudly deliver the saucepan to my mother so she can melt them into gooey caramelness.

The apples are washed and each standing tall sporting a flat wooden stick where the stem used to be. Wax paper is waiting to receive the apple draped in caramel. I am waiting for the caramel to harden just enough.

That first bite is tricky. I have to use both hands. One hand holds on to the stick. A finger from the other hand pushes the apple against my teeth so I can get caramel and apple in the bite. If I don’t push hard enough, my teeth only scrape the caramel. Once the apple skin is broken, the rest of the treat can be handled with one hand.

Years later at a craft fair, I discovered apple slices drizzled with warm caramel. Yum! That is now my preferred way of having this fall treat. Of course I rarely get this treat these days. Unfortunately, my husband does not care for caramel. I have been known to buy a container of caramel sauce. You might be surprised to find out how long that sauce can last in the refrigerator. 🙂

    How did you know I would be craving caramel after reading this? Yum! I just saw an idea for dipping flat apple slices. The idea was that they would be easier for kids to bite into, but I saw the added advantage of a higher ratio of caramel to apple!

    The season of Carmel apples brings so many wonderful memories. Thank you for reminding me of those smells and how yummy that first taste of melted Carmel…. is still worth the wait .

  3. I’ve always unwrapped those Kraft caramels, but a friend makes an unbelievable caramel sauce for dipping apple slices. When I asked for the recipe, she said you don’t want it! It had butter, brown sugar, Karo syrup, sweetened condensed milk, and marshmallow creme.

  4. I love the way you wrote that childhood memory… don’t you wish that kind of memory for every child? And for every mom who gives their kids these memories to know how long we will remember?

    I liked the line about teeth only scraping the caramel… such a tiny detail, but so real!

    Loved how you captured this memory and then came forward in time–I’m with you about dipping/drizzling apple slices in caramel sauce now. All the yummy flavor, little of the mess. And so much easier to eat!

    I was right there with you and your mom in the moment. I think you need the original version to just recreate this beautiful memory. I’m glad you’ve found easier ways to enjoy carmel and i LOVE carmel.

  7. Hi, Elsie! Happy Fall! I adore caramels, and apples, although as a child I couldn’t handle the combination together for some reason. Your post is full of the sweet warmth of childhood and home; I can almost smell the wonderful goodness of those caramel apples. The image of the waiting wax paper is so clear to me … and yes, you’ve made me hungry! 🙂

  9. I remember unwrapping this caramels, too, for a caramel apple dip my mom loved to make. Recently, I’ve been trying to master the art of a caramel apple. I just made the first batch of fall a week ago. Much to your chagrin, I loaded them up with toffee and peanuts and mini m&m’s.

    I made homemade caramel and it was decadent, but I still haven’t figured out how to make it picture perfect. I’ll keep trying. 🙂
