You weren’t invited, but you decided to “pop in” to check out the neighborhood. You didn’t think anyone spotted you, but you were wrong. I saw you through the kitchen window.
You sat up, looked around, then climbed the nearest tree. Conveniently, you found a shelf. It was perfect for a rest and to observe the world below.
Soon you became bored and disappeared in the foliage. Will you be back?

We have lived in our house sixteen years and I think this is only the second time we have had a squirrel in our backyard. It was quite a surprise to see it and watch it from the kitchen window.

That is pretty amazing to have only two squirrels in all those years!
This little cute visitor is fun to watch. I always get excited when I see a squirrel either in a forest or a park. I have never seen one close to home.
This sounds like the makings of a picture book. I can’t believe you don’t have squirrels. They are all over around here. When I was at Indiana University, they were rampant. It was easy to step on them because they were always darting across the sidewalk!
Ah-ha leave it to your “eagle eye” to detect an intruder! Then, as is your way, spin it into an intriguing story.
We have several squirrels who like to hop and skip across the grass and then jump into the trees. And this year we have 2 or 3 little bunnies (I’m hoping they don’t find my tomatoes!) And then the other day, a new critter – an opossum,
I was surprised as well! I thought those pesky squirrels invaded us all! What a delightful visitor then! Enjoy the mischief! 🐿
When we first built our house we didn’t have squirrels and now I have two this season that are enjoying my bird feeders and entertaining my dog for hours on end. They are quite the gymnast at my feeders. I’ll send mine your way.
I was also worried it might be a snake! This was such a fun post with astute observation of the details!
What a cute little visitor! I enjoyed guessing before I saw the picture. At first, I thought it was going to be snake!
Sometimes I swear we have more squirrels than blades of grass. Thanks for a fun post!
So fun to read your story addressing that squirrel, Elsie. I’m surprised, too. We have squirrels everywhere! I can spot only in the first two, not the longer one!
Two squirrels in sixteen years???? I can’t believe that! We have squirrels running over our roof most mornings. We have had a family of foxes in our yard this summer. They created a den under our next-door neighbor’s driveway. They has been fun to watch!
Wow! That’s some cool nature to watch!
I love the voice you used in this piece. How delightful! I have two squirrels that run the area. Harley loves to chase one when they are in the backyard. Of course, they scamper up the tree and then tease him. I’m just surprised you don’t have squirrels that often. They’re my entertainment many days during this stay-at-home order.
I know, we couldn’t believe the lack of squirrels either. This neighborhood used to be an open field, so I guess they didn’t discover that there are trees here now.
