What did you think when you read my title? Perhaps you’ve read articles on how to save the world. Perhaps you are doing your part by recycling whenever possible. Perhaps you are reducing your carbon footprint by driving a ecologically clean car.
Here are a few ideas I discovered when I googled how to save the world. Reader’s Digest has an article titled 5 Crazy Ideas that Might Save the Planet. These ideas are a bit crazy, but there is some scientific reasoning behind each one.
- Give the earth some shade
- Wrap Greenland in a blanket
- Feed pollution to the algae
- Float New York on the water
- Get plankton to the ocean’s surface
Popular Science has 10 Audacious Ideas to Save the Planet. Forbes published an article that lists 20 ways to save the world. My google search found about 138,000,000 results (0.76 seconds) for how to save the world.
This whole search for ideas to save the world came about because of a sign I saw the other day as I was leaving a movie theater.
Really?! Isn’t that overstating it just a bit? Wouldn’t it be nice if that’s all it takes to save the world? Sigh . . .

Might be an overstatement…but then again, it led to a lot of thinking, which may lead to more action…
Thinking about saving the world can get pretty overwhelming very quickly…I’m hoping it is the small steps, too. Maybe I need to add more fanfare, like the 3D glasses – “Here I am, helping this preschooler express his feelings with words – saving the world!” 🙂
I too want to HOPE that small changes will Save the World..HOPE..
Perhaps the sign is overstating things a bit. But subtlety mostly doesn’t work when it comes to protecting the environment. So I’m all for such signs that exaggerate, but only because so many people will not get the message otherwise. Those of us who care deeply about the environment have to keep believing that every effort, no matter how small, contributes to lessening the impact on the environment.
On my way out, but I’ll come back to read that Forbes article. I try to do as much as I can, thinking of the grandchildren’s future! Thanks, Elsie, love this.

When I read your title, I took a humanitarian bend. How about connect with kindness? Accept differences. Both go a long way.
Baby steps, I guess. It’s a small thing, but if everybody did it, it might just make a difference. And the world certainly does need saving in many ways.
These days, I’ll take anything that promises to save the world…

I agree, it’s overstating it a bit, but I think that recycling and reusing is one way to help the effort to save the earth.
This topic is an important one, Elsie. Thanks for making us take some time to think about how we can help. You are certainly right! It is not a simple thing. The political climate is not the best for helping our planet either. But we try to recycle, plant trees, plant flowers and bushes that are native to Pennsylvania, and plant bee balm and such to help our bees. We donate to national parks, Sierra Club, etc., and I still feel like we’re not making a little dent. It’s frustrating!
Ugh! Our poor, poor planet. I have great hope for this next generation. They have to do better than ours!
If each of us would only do one of those “138,000,000 results (0.76 seconds) for how to save the world.”, we actually might have a cleaner world to live in.
Recycling old glasses might not save the world alone, but it is one step on the road. Or, they could let someone read for the first time who might, later, go on to discover how to save the planet.
I used to think I might save the world by just making the part of it I can touch–really touch–as positive as I could. I don’t think that anymore. Sigh.
