Taste of Summer

“I think it’s ready,” I said.

“Are you sure?” he replied.

I reached out for a final check. It yielded slightly to my touch. The skin was smooth and red.

“Yes, I am sure,” I said as I sliced into the first tomato of the summer.

  1. Simple slice and so perfect. My dad used to sing a song while slicing tomatoes…
Two things that money can’t buy
    That’s true love and
    Homegrown tomatoes

The first tomato of the summer tastes better than anything. My mother’s green house has some that are almost ready. We are all waiting.

  3. OMG, that looks amazing. I little sprinkle of salt, and I could make a meal of that. I remember summer meals of fresh off the vine tomatoes and fresh picked corn. Yes, Summer is here!

  4. I remember when I was a kid and mom would let us pick anything from the garden when we were out playing. There was nothing like the smell and taste of a sun ripened, sun warmed freshly picked tomato! We ate them like apples and let the juice run down our arms!

  5. Yummmm! my favorite memory of my grandparents farm, and you peel them just like my grandma did! My grandpa ate them with sugar on top, but my grandma and I like ours with salt. I really miss them both…

  6. You are ahead of us too—but can’t wait for the first “real” one. Soon though we will be able to have fried green tomatoes! Almost as good!
